The potential of aquaculture

The potential of aquaculture

I have always wanted to protect the environment, and my goal going into ecology was to be innovative and create new ways to improve environmental health. My motives behind choosing the research project that I did on this trip were to study changing environments (often changed by anthropogenic causes) in an effort to use a better understanding of Mo’orea’s ecology to  direct environmental decision making. I read this article today on the current status of fish farming, and it gives a good snapshot of several different ways in which innovative people are designing and redesigning aquaculture setups to support our large human population whilst making a little of an impact on the ocean as possible. I always enjoy hearing about the creative ways in which people are using  science and an understanding of ecology (in this case trophic structures and physical oceanography) to facilitate a sustainable coexistence between humans and their surroundings.
